Star-Ledger on the Ledge?

The Sun is not the only local paper with a decent arts section staring into oblivion this week. Now (according to Crain's) the Newark Star-Ledger--whose long serving full-time critic is Michael Sommers--"is notifying employees that the newspaper will be sold or closed in early January unless it reaches a contract deal with its drivers union."

What used to be a multi-paper theatre town may even be getting smaller, if you can believe it.

As a crossword fan, I read about a poll from some NY Sun puzzlers to see if they could independently fund Peter Gordon (their crossword editor) so as to keep the puzzles going, at least electronically. They talked about using a subscription model (or pay-per-puzzle).

They'd be paying very little--$0.10 a puzzle--but in a large enough bulk that they could keep things going. Critics like Sommers and Grode must have a following of people who trust their voice . . . isn't there some way to find a new media to keep them in some sort of print?
